- PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Subway The "metropolitana" is Milan's fastest form of public transport. Subway signs are red with a white letter M. The subway runs from 6am to around midnight. There are three lines: the M1 (red line), which crosses the city from east to west; M2 (green line), which connects the main railroad stations; and the M3 (yellow line), which runs from north to south. Tram, Buses
Tram, buses and trolleybuses are run by the Milan transport authority (ATM). They run from between 4am and 6am until between midnight and 1am. All stops are marked by signs showing the route, connections and schedules. Tickets
Tickets for travel in the city center cost a flat fee of 1 - 2€. Tickets cannot be bought on board; you have to buy them in advance from a tobacconist's, bar, news-stand or a ticket machine near one of the main stops. You can buy special pass costing 3€ which gives you 24 hours unlimited travel on buses, tram and the subway. You can also get a 48-hour pass for 5,50€.
- TAXI
You can phone for a taxi: 024040, 026969, 028585. Taxis are fairly expensive in Milan. There also extra charges for late night arrival and on holidays. - PARKING
There is a lot of traffic in Milan, but it is less chaotic than in other Italian cities. Note that parking places are rarely free. Parking is restricted in the center: you can park in the zones marked with blu lines if you have a "Scrape-and-Park" card available at sale locations (sostamilano). Parking on road-sides marked with yellow lines is for residents only. - SHOPPING
Shops generally open from 9.30am to 12.30pm and 3.30pm to 7.30pm, although many stores, especially in city centres, open continuously from 9.00am to 7.30pm. Besides being closed on Sundays, they normally close for half a day during the week (in the cities Monday afternoon for food shops, Monday morning for the others). - POSTAL AND BANKING SERVICES
Post offices are normally open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 1.50pm and Saturday from 8.30 to 12 noon. Banks are open Monday to Friday, generally with the following hours: 8.30am to 1.30pm; 2.45pm to 4.30pm. |
